Is iLovePDF safe for confidential documents?

It depends on what you upload and what you’re willing to trust. When a PDF website does the job on its own servers, a copy of your file goes to that company, and you rely on its security and its promise to delete the file. For a passport, a contract or tax papers, the safest copy is the one that never leaves your Mac.

What uploading a file means

Your file travels over the internet to the company’s computers, is processed there, and the result comes back. From then on you can’t see what happens to the copy: how long it’s kept, who can reach it, or in which country it’s stored. You have the company’s word for it, in its policy.

What to check before you upload, on iLovePDF or any PDF site

  • Does the job run on their servers, or in your browser tab?
  • How long do they keep your files, and can you delete them yourself?
  • Where are their servers?
  • Do they have a desktop app that works offline?
  • Does your employer, school or client allow uploading their documents to outside services?

iLovePDF explains its own rules on its security page; read it for the answers that apply to it.

When uploading is fine

A file that is public anyway: a flyer, a menu, a printed handout, a form with nothing filled in. If you wouldn’t mind a stranger reading it, the risk is small.

When to keep it on your Mac

  • Passports, ID cards and visa papers
  • Contracts, NDAs and anything a client gave you in confidence
  • Tax returns, payslips and bank statements
  • Medical letters and test results

Doing the same jobs without uploading

  • Preview, free on every Mac: File → Export → Quartz Filter “Reduce File Size” compresses a PDF (often blurry, sometimes bigger: why).
  • Free tools on this site that run in your browser tab, so nothing is uploaded: merge PDFs, HEIC to JPG and remove photo location. Once the page has loaded, they work with the Wi-Fi off.
  • Whizra, on your Mac: select the file and type compress it, merge these or zip with password 1234. Your files never leave your Mac.

Questions

Is it safe to upload a passport scan to a PDF website?

You give a copy of your passport to a company you can’t check on. If you can do the job on your Mac instead (Preview, or Whizra), that copy never exists.

Can I compress or merge a PDF without uploading it?

Yes. Preview compresses with its “Reduce File Size” filter, the free tools on whizra.com merge in your browser tab, and Whizra does both on your Mac by typing compress it or merge these.

Do the free tools on whizra.com upload my files?

No. They run in your browser tab; nothing is uploaded, and once the page has loaded they work with the Wi-Fi off.
