Remove location from photos before sharing
A photo from a phone often carries the exact place it was taken, the camera and the date, inside the file. Anyone you send the file to can read them, so take them out before sharing a photo taken at home or anywhere private.
Why it matters
The location is stored as GPS coordinates, precise enough to point to a house. Sent as a file (by email, AirDrop or as a document in a chat), the photo keeps it unless something removes it.
Three ways on a Mac
- Photos, free: open the photo’s Info and remove the location, one photo at a time.
- Free tool on this site: remove photo location works in your browser tab, nothing uploaded. JPG and PNG copies keep the exact same picture; HEIC photos come out as JPGs.
- Whizra: select the photos and type
remove location from these photos
. You get copies without location, camera details and dates; the originals are never changed.
Questions
Does removing the location change the photo?
Not with the free tool on this site or Whizra: they make a copy without the details, and your original stays as it was.
Can I do many photos at once?
Yes: the free browser tool and Whizra take a whole batch. Photos does one at a time.
